A Photographers Travel Checklist

It’s that time again when I must recheck and recheck again to make sure I have all the necessities before packing the camera on a plane and traveling off to a location not-so-close to home. I will soon be in Iceland with a few photographer friends and while packing light is always the priority — having enough to get by for a couple weeks is a concern as well.

My pack list from my American Southwest adventure this past fall proved to be successful but I must admit with all the restrictions and frustrations of travel — I do miss the days when all I had was a small pocket camera.

In the spirit of travel and because I’m not yet in Iceland, today’s image is flash back from my November trip to the Southwest National Parks. The first stop was Zion National Park and here I am along side the Pa’rus trail (N 37 12.894 W 112 58.524) in the Virgin River looking south.

The pack list for Iceland

Everything must fit into two bags and because I booked my flight prior to April 1st, the carry-on weight restriction for IcelandAir is a very challenging 13lbs. The carry-on of choice will be a Flipside 400 with a checked Porter 46. The crazy part is that my laptop puts me over the 13lbs but I’m allowed to carry it on in a separate bag as a ‘personal item’ to use.

More in-depth details and reviews will come but for now:

In the Flipside will be a Canon 5D, Canon 7D, 17-40 Lens, 70-200 Lens, (1) bag of polarizers, ND & ND grad filters, (4) 16gb cf cards in card safe, (1) 750gb passport drive, (1) euro plug adapter, (4) LPE6 batteries, (3) NB7L batteries, (1) battery charger, (4) lens cloths, (1) lens pen and (1) usb cable. Still not under 13lbs but close enough.

In the Porter 46, I’ll have (1) tripod and ballhead, (1) travel powerstrip, (1) euro plug adapter, (1) battery charger, (1) bag of cables, remotes, brackets and all clothes, hats, gloves, rain gear, etc.

In the macbook sleeve is (1) 13″ Macbook, (1) Macbook powerbrick and (1) CF card reader.

In my jacket pockets is a Canon G10, iPhone, headphones, passport, pen & travel docs.

I’m sure I’m forgetting something but it’s go time and it’s all mapped out.
